Ready Player One is an upcoming American film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Zak Pennand Ernest Cline, and based on Cline's 2011 novel of the same name. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T. J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. The film is set in a near-future dystopian Earth, where the population spends most of its time in an interconnected virtual space called the OASIS. When the founder of OASIS dies and bequeaths ownership of OASIS to the first person to find a hidden treasure within OASIS by playing games and solving puzzles, a race ensues between a young man and his friends, and a large corporate entity that wants to control OASIS for themselves.
The film is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. on March 30, 2018.

In the year 2045, much of Earth's population centers have become slum-like cities due to overpopulation, pollution, corruption, and climate change. To escape their desolation, people engage in the virtual reality world of the OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), where they can engage in numerous activities for work, education, and entertainment.
Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is a teenager from Columbus, Ohio who frequents the OASIS and attempts to win "Anorak’s Game", a game created by the recently-deceased creator of the OASIS, James Halliday (Mark Rylance), in search of its Easter Egg. The winner is to be granted full ownership of the OASIS and Halliday's $240 billion fortune. While Wade works with several friends from the OASIS to discover Anorak's treasure, the corporate giant Innovative Online Industries (IOI) employs a number of players to try to discover the treasure first and seize control of OASIS for themselves.

Production[edit]
Warner Bros. and De Line Pictures won an auction for the rights to Ernest Cline's book Ready Player One in 2010, before it had been published.[14] Cline was set to write the script for the film, which Donald De Line and Dan Farah would produce.[14] Eric Eason rewrote Cline's script,[15] and Zak Penn was hired to rewrite the previous drafts by Cline and Eason. Village Roadshow Pictures came aboard to co-finance and co-produce the film with WB.[16] Steven Spielberg signed on to direct and produce the film, which Kristie Macosko Krieger would also produce along with Line and Farah.[17]

Three actresses were top-runners for the role of Art3mis: Elle Fanning, Olivia Cooke, and Lola Kirke;[18] In September 2015, Cooke was announced as the female lead role.[4] Ben Mendelsohn was cast in the film to play the villainous role as an executive for an OASIS-based corporation.[5] Tye Sheridan was confirmed for the lead role of Wade at the end of February 2016.[3] In mid-March 2016, Simon Pegg entered final talks to join the cast in the role of Ogden Morrow, co-creator of the OASIS.[7] Mark Rylance joined the cast as James Halliday, the creator of OASIS.[8] In June 2016, T. J. Miller was cast in the film to play a bounty hunter,[6] Hannah John-Kamen was cast for an unspecified supporting role,[11] and Japanese singer-actor Win Morisaki was cast as Toshiro Yoshiaki, also known as Daito.[19]
Filming[edit]
Production was set to begin in July 2016.[20] Screenwriter Zak Penn tweeted on July 1, 2016, that the first week of filming was completed.[21] In August and September 2016, filming took place in Birmingham, England, which included Livery Street in the Jewellery Quarter area which also utilized the backpackers hostel Hatters for internal filming; other locations in the city included the former industrial area of Digbeth. The film is set in Ohio.[22][23] Principal photography ended on September 27, 2016.[24][25]
Post-production[edit]
Spielberg is currently working with Industrial Light & Magic to oversee the film's visual effects, spending three 3-hour meetings every week with the effects company.[25]He has stated that "This is the most difficult movie I’ve done since [Saving Private Ryan]".[25]
Cultural references[edit]
Just like the book, the film has numerous homages to the popular culture of the last decades. Among licensed characters and elements used in the film are The Iron Giant, the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, outfitted with KITT from Knight Rider, the DC Comics universe, The Lord of the Rings, Freddy Krueger, Duke Nukem, the possessed car from Christine, the van from The A-Team, the modified Ford Falcon used in Mad Max, the monster truck Bigfoot, Kaneda's motorcycle from Akira, Tracer from Overwatch, the RX-78-2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam, Ryu, Blanka and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, the Mach 5 from Speed Racer, Chucky from Child's Play, Battletoads, and King Kong.[26][27][28][29][30]
Spielberg recognized that his past films were a significant part of the 1980s popular culture cited in the book, and to avoid being accused of "vanity", he opted to avoid using many references to his own films.[31]
Music[edit]
On June 9, 2016, Variety stated that Spielberg's regular collaborator John Williams was planning to compose the film's score.[32] However in July 2017, it was reported that Williams had left the project to work on Spielberg's The Post instead, with Alan Silvestri hired to take over scoring duties for Ready Player One.[1]
Release[edit]
Ready Player One was scheduled to be released on December 15, 2017.[33] The date was later pushed back to March 30, 2018, to avoid competition with Star Wars: The Last Jedi.[34] Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film worldwide, and Village Roadshow Pictures will distribute in several overseas territories.[35]
